Retirement homes is new boost to Gibraltar
(Taken from Panorama Magazine)
It was late morning, sunlight filtering through a slight haze, glistening the green leaves on the trees and plants. It was idyllic, the gentle sound of the sea adding to the enchantment. Was this paradise? It was Both Worlds, fast being transformed into a village of retirement homes.
"Retirement homes have a great future," enthused Abe Massias, the developer behind the scheme.
Gibraltar is limited, and they are making the best of what there is. The homes are specially designed for those wishing to retire here. Every little detail has been taken care of. From having light sockets at the right height to double-glazing on the windows.
The first phase of 35 units are expected to be sold this year, the first twelve within the next few months. "Demand has been much greater than anyone can imagine," he added. "What we are getting are permanent tourists."
With the new road on the way to completion, the scheme is expected to fully take off. Advertising last year drew close on 2,000 replies.
The story of Both Worlds goes back 25 years. Now, it is taking on a new look and adapting itself for what is, in Gibraltar, an untapped market - another "first" for Mr. Massias.

Although many people might wish to retire to other places, Gibraltar has a special appeal because of its southern location and its British links. There are many people attracted by the idea of a "sunny British place" abroad.
What Gibraltar must do is promote its plus-points, the advantages of the place which only too often we take for granted
